CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Amber counted down from twenty, giving everyone time to prepare. Scarlett patted her chest. Runeclaw jumped up and sank his claws into her armored vest. She cradled him against the rifle Lin had insisted she carry and drew her wand with her other hand. “Once we’re up top, move to my shoulder so I can shoot.”

“Got it.”

Scarlett appreciated that his attitude showed he was totally focused on the mission ahead, ready to bring some havoc down on the Luminous Veil. Lin’s face showed she was as well, which made three of them. When Amber hit zero, Scarlett and Lin launched skyward on blasts of force magic.

Their position was toward the center of the roof, which meant they were between the guards at the corners. Team Three was already flying into view to their right to deal with the guards nearest them. Scarlett hit the surface running, and Runeclaw scrambled up to free her hands.

She gripped the rifle, pointed it roughly toward the skylight, and held the trigger down. Bullets slammed into the glass and sent shards raining down into the building as the barrage created an opening. She hit the button to release the rifle’s strap and tossed the weapon away as she ran. Her pistol was in her hand as she jumped through the skylight.

Time slowed as she plummeted, movement coming in flashes as people reacted below and shocked faces looked up, fingers pointing out the intruder in their midst. Molten metal flowed from the furnaces at the end of the channels to gather in the center crucible where they formed the collars.

The thought that if she’d been unlucky, her flight might have landed her in that wickedly hot material flitted across her mind as she calculated her landing point. Fortunately, it was between the channels.

Runeclaw’s nails dug into her shirt outside the protection of her armored vest as he repositioned in preparation for the fight ahead. She landed with a burst of force magic to cushion the impact and fell into a roll as her partner jumped away. When she came up, she pointed her revolver at the nearest bald man in glimmering robes and pulled the trigger.

The anti-magic round crossed the distance between them in an instant. It would’ve removed his head from his body and thus him from the fight if a man dressed in a black suit hadn’t leapt in front of him. The bullet struck the man in the chest, but no blood appeared. Scarlett growled, “Some kind of body armor.” She tried another shot, but the robed figure was already in motion, diving for protection behind part of the collar-making equipment that lay between her and him.

She swung the gun to her right in search of another target but held her fire as the ground-level doors broke open and the Witches flowed in. She couldn’t risk a shot under that circumstance for fear it might hit an ally. She shoved the gun into its holster and shouted to Runeclaw, “Good hunting.”
